Comes a Time for Burning (Dr. Thomas Parks)

Product Description

Busy putting in stitches and bandaging lumberjacks' injuries, young Dr. Thomas Parks has no idea that his worst enemy is lurking in the sleepy village of Port McKinney in the spring of 1892. When one of the working girls at the Clarissa Hotel is brought to the Clinic desperately ill,  Thomas's newly arrived associate wastes no time in making the diagnosis--Asian Cholera has somehow found this back water near Puget Sound. The cholera strikes viciously and kills in days, sometimes even hours. It soon becomes apparent that Thomas and his clinic have neither the supplies nor the means to provide effective treatment for the outbreak, and in hours, they are swamped. Afraid for the safety of his wife and daughter and all those close to him, Thomas still is driven by professional curiosity about the contagion's origins, especially when it appears that one of his own nurses is in some way responsible. Before he can mount a truly effective defense, the battle spreads, threatening the very life of the village.Always a man driven by his own curiosities and ambitions, Thomas discovers that his greatest allies are those closest to him. Comes a Time for Burning is the second in the Dr. Thomas Parks adventure series of historical novels, following the recent release of Race for the Dying.

Steven Havill's novel, "Comes a Time for Burning" is a stupendous read for a variety of reasons. It is the story of a small, settlement in the Northwest late in the 19th Century, a settlement whose primary income derives from lumbering and a small if active port. There is of course, a saloon and hotel to house the strays of both those occupations, including some relatively unabashed ladies who entertain the young men of both trades. Author Havill also introduces a strong-willed evangelist preacher in what seems to be the town's only church.

"Comes a Time for Burning" opens with portraits of the town's only doctor, Thomas Parks, his wife Alvinia, and a variety of friends and employees of the house and small clinic. In these early passages, we are shown the doctor's extraordinary skill and knowledge for the day, as he treats lumber men who've been injured with saws, falls, and rough horseplay. Finally, a young doctor, Lucius Hardy, joins the staff of Parks's medical family and... Read more

I certainly enjoyed Comes A Time For Burning. I like the characters and the story line. I read the first in this series, Race for the Dying. I laughed at myself because the entire time I was reading Comes a Time for Burning I felt like I needed to wash my hands--the story includes a cholera outbreak. Steve Havill's books are well written, nicely paced, a good read, with interesting characters. I look forward to him writing another book of this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best All-Time Mystery Author Pens a Great Western, July 19, 2011

Steven Havill is my favorite mystery writer, followed closely by Mary Roberts Rinehart. Different genres, I know. If you are still mourning Tony Hillerman, please begin reading Steven Havill's product. You won't be disappointed! Instead of the Navajo-Zuni-Hopi culture, which Mr. Hillerman so delightfully portrayed, you will have sheriff-rancher-desert-Latina characters who will become as real, and probably loved, as Joe Leaphorn. I bought this book for my husband as he's a big "Western" fan, and he really enjoyed it. In fact, he's begun reading my entire Havill collection and he doesn't particularly care for the crime genre. Think I've made a convert!
